Weekend Outlook

I’m relieved to say the least, that it’s the weekend. There was a ton going on this week event wise, work wise, everything wise but my mind was just not fully there. With a heavy heart I have to say that my grandpa passed away this week. He would have been 92 next Tuesday so he lived a happy, wonderful and long life. As sad as I am, the silver lining is that he is able to join the love of his life, my Nana. I’m going to take the weekend to recharge, be surrounded by friends and family and reflect on a wonderful man. Next week, I’ll be back to business and ready to work hard….until that is, my trip to New York on May 18th….

I hope you all have a great weekend spent with the ones you love…..

Rachel Roy’s Midtown Showroom

“Designing the showroom was really like designing a collection. The inspiration was a Parisian apartment in New York with beautiful wood details that felt clean and modern but warm”.

- Rachel Roy, Refinery 29

These pictures of Rachel Roy’s office in Midtown kill me. Just kill me. It’s always so inspiring to me to see a strong female entrepreneur and these images of her office make me dream of having something of my own like that one day. For now, I’ll be cooped up in my tiny office that’s overflowing, but I can always daydream about spaces like so, right? Check out the rest of the images on Refinery 29.

Here are a couple shots of some recent client work that Tracey Ayton shot for me in late February. This project consisted of a kitchen and bathroom redo, lots of new millwork via Out Of Line Designs and bright new colours!  It’s always fun working with clients who embrace bold hues! I got to colaborate with some fantastic local companies including Hunter Developments as my Contractor and Master Window Coverings to do all of the custom drapery. Local artist Zoe Pawlak painted the stunning canvas that scales the navy blue wall (it’s available at Zientte in Gastown).  Hope you enjoy the first peek, I’ll be putting the shots up on my website soon.

Office Wishlist

Office Chic TOT

I feel like my office is always in a state of disaster and that’s mostly because currently it’s about 50 square feet max. As you can imagine I have a lot of stuff going on in there- a desk, chair, bulletin board and a sample library. And some junk. Lots of junk. I bet I’m not alone though trying to streamline all of my stuff in a lack of square footage right? I have some shelves to install and I will be getting a new inspiration board soon. Once I’m done, I’ll post a few photos! In the meantime, here is an office I dreamed up….lots of peach, my absolute favourite colour of the moment!

Clockwise from left:

  1. Worlds Away Gold Leaf Pendant, Zinc Door
  2. Flamingo Mingle Print, Cozamia

Patio Perfection

After a little blog break, I’m back and excited to introduce a new look! What do we think of the new layout/design? I had Kelly of Fabulous K create the look and graphics for me and Carolyn of Also Known As in Vancouver to do the programming. All and all, I’m positively thrilled with the turnout! So a huge thank you to Kelly and Carolyn!

A few weeks ago, Tracey Ayton and I shot this outdoor space I designed for an article that I just wrote for Home Decor and Renovations magazine. We were lucky to get decent weather and the light was just right. And of course my dog Jackson HAD to get in on the action. I picked up a copy on the weekend but I will make sure to post the link when the online version is available, but I’ve included the text below. Happy patio season!

Spring is upon us! Which means patio season is right around the corner. It’s time to pull out the loungers, dust off your table and chairs and get your outdoor space set up for dinner parties, soirees and relaxing nights enjoying the summer sunset. When it comes to trends and must-haves this season, here are a few simple, yet effective tips to get your patio looking superb!

Patio-1 Reduced TOT

Patio Furniture More and more, lounge furniture is becoming the must have of all outdoor spaces. Slowly replacing the standard table and chairs, a sofa or sectional is a great alternative because it provides comfort and versatility. Lounge seating will commonly have an all-weather or resin wicker, metal or wood base with plush cushions to maximize comfort. This furniture is great for gatherings, a casual barbeque and relaxing in the sun. It is truly like having a living room on your deck.

Patio-12 Reduced TOT Fabrics & Pillows Decorative pillows are not just for your living room anymore! Toss cushions bring the comfort of the indoors outside. Many companies like Sunbrella are producing stunning high performance fabrics that are safe both indoors and out. The fabric is dyed throughout the yarn meaning it is resistant to fading. Most fabrics nowadays can stand up to the environmental elements; however I do recommend taking them into storage when you know the forecast is not in your favour. These fabrics are designed to resist mildew, staining and fading and usually wipe clean with a damp cloth. Bold stripes, playful ikats and strong geometric patterns in bright colours are on trend for 2012. Keep in mind the décor style and colours of the indoor room of which the patio or outdoor space is directly adjacent. Pull inspiration from your indoor space to get a colour scheme going for the outdoors. In the summer when your patio doors are wide open, the decor will flow harmoniously.

Greenery Depending on the lush outdoors around you, it is ideal to have a bit of greenery on the patio with your furniture. Over scale planters are a beautiful way to display large plants or even small trees which can be found at local stores or online at retailers like Home Sense and Restoration Hardware. Try to keep the plant pots matching or similar in style and colour for a streamlined, clean look. For smaller plants, it’s a good idea to display them on a side table or coffee table. Topiaries are very popular and add a touch of sophistication to any patio.

Accessories The perfect patio would not be complete without accessories! A great tray will provide double duty as a hard surface when set on an ottoman for guests to put down their drinks as well as serving to them. Lanterns, candles and tiki torches are crucial for providing some ambiance and a bit of lighting after the sun goes down. A large basket stuffed with cozy blankets in an accent colour will provide warmth for watching the sunset. Vases, art and knick knacks make the space feel like home, just remember to bring all of your valuables inside when it rains!

Here’s to barbecue chicken, the smell of the grill, ice cold lemonade, orange sunsets, Bocci ball and endless nights with friends all on your beautifully decorated patio! Happy Spring and Summer!
